Odysseus clings to a narrow broken mast floating alone on an enormous dark sea after the destruction of his ship. His figure is extremely small near the lower center of the composition. No other sailors remain. Far above him, one colossal pale wave rises like a monumental curved stone wall, frozen in a simplified sculptural form. A tiny crescent moon hangs in the vast navy sky. The image contains only a few essential shapes: one tiny man, one broken mast, one gigantic wave and an immense field of darkness.
