Lark ducked down and through the bushes. What she saw would haunt her for the rest of her life.
The creature wasn't walking down the lane; it was floating, almost dragging its way, as though an invisible string were pulling it forward; only its bare toes just barely scraped the concrete. The sound of the chains? They were wrapped around the creature, some dragging along behind. These chains seemed to help hold together the shreds of cloth that made up its clothes; a torn robe wrapped tightly around its body. There was a flash of lightning, and the creature was suddenly facing them. Lark screamed. Inky black ooze streamed out of its blank, white eyes and half-open mouth. A clap of thunder, and it was a little closer... a little closer...
