Then Achilles donned the armour. First he put the goodly greaves upon his legs, fitting them with silver ankle-clasps; next he did on the breastplate about his chest; he slung the silver-studded sword of bronze about his shoulders, and then he took up the mighty shield that was so great and strong. The gleam of it shone afar, like moonlight. As when from some beacon-fire at sea a light shines out to sailors, while they are being borne over the fish-giving waters by storm winds far from friends and home, even so did the gleam of Achilles' wondrous shield shine out into the air.
